Another low oil pressure question.

I've found some of the earlier posts here about low oil pressure.
I'm not yet sure if my 254 is safe to operate. 254 oil pressure is always
in lower red zone on gauge. After engine runs five minutes, oil pressure
goes even lower. I've installed new manual oil pressure gauge which shows no oil pressure at all. Have changed oil and filter. Used 15/40 oil and Fram PH3600
oil filter. No difference. Have removed sensor while engine running and there is a slow steady stream of oil pumping out of where the sensor screws into the engine block. Oil filter does get warm after running a bit. So it seems there is some oil circulation. Looked inside engine valve cover, but not much oil up there. Don't see any oil flowing over rocker arms. But there seems to be a little around the valve stems. Increasing the throttle doesn't increase oil pressure at all.
This is a new tractor and engine. It has not done any work yet, except to test
FEL operation.
Engine does not overheat. Temp. gauge only moves slightly. Engine is not hot to touch. All fluids are full including radiator. No smoking from exhaust except during
start. Engine runs smooth. Temperature outdoors is about 12 degrees F.
That is all the info. that I have so far.
I hope you can help.

Best regards,
gabmuks

You have a issue. I took the pressure sensor out of my 254 and cranked it for 1 second and oil shot 24" or so. With just a dribble you have either a bad oil pump or a worn crank journal/bearing and its now time to tear it down since you verified oil little or no pressure with a mechanical gauge.

I assume this is a crate tractor. Not to add insult to injury but this is why so many of us warn against the crate option. At best you will be waiting for a replacement tractor. This is going to get messy. Sorry for the bad news.

Chris

I agree with Chris.
There are several ways an engine can suffer from low to no oil pressure but mostly through crank and cam shaft bearing wear. Oil pumps themselves are rarely an issue.
I would not attempt any repairs if you bought it from a dealer, simply return it. However, you may not have that luxury if it was a crate tractor.

There is an adjustment screw on the filter head to set the oil pressure. Have you tried adjusting that yet? The setting from the factory is low and you need to set it higher.

Do the adjusting when the engine is at about 190 deg F for it to be right. The screw is a bypass valve and you want to set the pressure at idle at about 15-25 psi and no more.

This is a common problem and has been discussed to great lengths here and other sites.

Set the regulator.

Carl, I know of the adjusting screw, but would changing that adjustment affect the warranty? I purposely omitted that in my post since it is a brand new tractor.

Well, it may be as simple as the OPSU not having been "calibrated". The OE sender is of the diaphgram type. Oil pushes against the diaphgram, the pressure is read as resistance to ground. That's what moves the needle on the gauge; 12v on one side from the battery, xx ohms of resistance through the sending unit to ground.

Turn the key to the ON position, note where the gauge needle is in relation to zero. Loosen the jam nut behind the OPSU. Rotate the OPSU clockwise or counterclockwise while watching the gauge needle. If rotating the sending unit has no effect on the gauge, it's likely a bad OPSU. If it does, stop when the needle is dead on zero. Tighten the jam nut. Start the engine and observe oil pressure.

Did you start the engine with the OPSU removed? If that results in the big spurt that Chris described, you might want to try the manual gauge again. If none of this stuff results in any kind of meaningful oil pressure, you need to give serious thought to taking the matter up with the seller.

//greg//, did you read the OP question ? How would calibrating the OPSU have anything to do with his problem ? He took the sending unit completly off,no oil pressure!!! He put on a manual gauge No oil pressure!!!

There is a oil pressure regulator where the oil filter screws on that could be out of adjustment and bypassing ,you could try adjusting that first,I have also seen the gasket that holds the oil filter head on installed backwards and it blocked oil pressure if no improvement it's going to be internal, cam bearing, crankshaft bearing, oil pump.I would not recommend running the engine with this low oil pressure.

If you purchased from a dealer you need to be contacting them for repairs,if you purchased directly in the crate, you are likely on your own.Which engine do you have ? What are your mechanical abilitys ?

I can't look at engine right now, but it is a 3 cyl. that I have seen mentioned
on this site. I will try to adjust pressure regulator.
Also have contacted seller and manufacturer for instructions.
Could probably do repairs if necessary, but would be asking a lot of questions
in the process. Hopefully I haven't done too much damage already.
Tractor seems sound otherwise and am happy with purchase regardless.
Thank you all for your help. Will definitely be back here.
Let you know what happens.

Best regards

Gabmuks
