I did end up taking off the cover. It was heavy and I did not tear up the gasket too much. You have to take the cover off, or remove the shifters. You need clearance to get the cylinder out.
When I go the piston out, the O ring was broken, as were the plastic wipers. I had to clean out the bits. I have not fired it up yet to check for leaks, but it looks good.
I also had a problem with the FEL not working, (another post). The screws were tight on the valves. There was a slight amount of dirt on the valves. I will see what happens with this as well.
