Does your switch look like this?

And here is a short video of someone replacing a key switch on a Jinma tractor that thinks they have an ignition system – which they don’t. Be sure to check all your fuses first because the key switch may not be the problem.

I’ve never seen one with a dust cover. And are you saying you turn it back to the “off” position after starting it?

He could be turning it back to the “H” position, in which case the glow plugs would come on and make the ammeter show a discharge since the alternator is only rated for 14 amps. Hope that’s not the case.

But he did not give the make, model, and year of the tractor so it’s all just a wild guess. I’m really bad at mind reading too.

I turn the switch to the right and this is the position for the glow plug to go on. after starting I was told to turn the switch to the middle position. upon doing this the altinator sops charging. if I don’t need the glow plug to start I turn the switch to the left to start. this is a jimma 25 hp about 12 yrs old

Strange, mine is 11 (December 2007) And the “H” for heat is spring loaded. You hold it in the “H” position as long as you want the glow plugs on, continue to the right to “S” to start it, let go when it starts, and it returns to “ON”. I don’t believe it has another Start on the left. If it’s warm and I don’t need the glow plugs, I just go right past the “H” to the Start position.

I would think that the glow plugs are only used on a cold start. Do you see a charge where the switch lands when releasing from the start position? You should. If you move the switch further to the left in might be putting it into accessory only. These tractors are wired kinda different. But that is another story.

Willba, it would help to see a picture of your switch to see how many positions it has.

Have you had the tractor for very long?

It sounds to me like you are turning the key switch off after you start the engine, and in doing so opens the alternator field circuit so it would stop charging.

The next time you start the engine just let go of the key, don’t turn it, and see what it does.

I also would like to mention, we try to keep the terminology consistent with the terms used by the manufacturer to reduce errors cause by language barriers, this is why it is labeled as an ignition switch and you will notice the rest of the industry follows suite.

I would say that what ever the positions are arranged on the switch(you can work it out what is best for you to remember) you need a 4 position switch or a 3 with a separate  momentary button switch for the glow plugs and add a relay for them. the one Bob showed earlier in the post would be what it needs. but a relay can be added to relieve the amp draw to it to make it be less prone to breakage.

Tyler, I had no idea you were the owner of that video, and that you are reluctant to openly share it. Good for you that you want to keep it proprietary to further your agenda.

Yes. As is the case, it sometimes takes awhile for the “industry” to catch up with reality due to a conservative mindset and unwillingness to change, and in the case of Chinese products, most often meanings and nomenclature are lost in the translation. A case in point is Kenworth trucks coming around to calling them “Ignition Key Switch”. You must admit that the term Key Switch is a generic term and eliminates confusion where people are involved that acknowledge the difference. But I digress.

I’m thinking you might actually have a four position switch but might be unaware of it. I haven’t encountered a three position key switch in this application. When you turn the key to the right are there actually two more positions? The red light on the dash indicates there is power to the alternator fields. It is unrelated to the glow plugs. It is also possible that you have a defective switch, this happens occasionally.
