        have you pulled the  cover off that the shifter is mounted in. I seem to remember someone having a retainer pin fall out that hold the fork in place , it acted like a broke fork.

            yes i have the cover off it is broke in half . i just found a way to remove it and replace it. if i move the shaft toward the back passed what would be reverse (there are 3 indents in the rod 1 for  reverse 1 for netural 1 for 1st gear with a spring and ball bearing in the back case to hold the rod in place) it will move back passed reverse until the  rod comes out of the front case and allows me remove the roll pin and replace the broken fork  thanks

            is the fork some kinda cast or is it stamped metal, I was wondering if you were gonna try  weld it back together.

              the forks are cast   . I  bought a new one from circle G tractors $28  a gasket $11.  and $11. shipping

                yeah being cast you are better off replacing    good luck on the reassembly
