Your two stage clutch is out of adjustment. There is a procedure to adjust it and I think the process is in one of the articles on this site.

I just checked and it's not there. It used to be, me and others put it together. Maybe Hal can find it a put it back. In fact many of the old articles are missing. There is a lot of history that has been lost from renewing the site over the years.

I can post the method if you can't find it in your tractor manual. You do have a manual don't you?

It may be a bad shift lump, does it grind ? or does the lever just move up and down but does not engage or disengage ?

If it's the latter of the two the shift lump has broken, you have to remove the lift box to repair it

            Tommy,

The lever just lifts up and down there is no grind at all and does not disengage, the 2 stage clutch seems to work fine, are there any details on how to swap out the shift lump?

              Carl thanks,

The 2  stage clutch seems to work as it should but the manuel is not so good it's the Chineese manuel that came with the tractor, there is a lot left out.

Ok, pretty sure its the shift lump, you need to remove the hydraulic lift box, the part under the seat, its pretty heavy so you need some help to get it off.Once you have it off, move the PTO engage and disengage lever you will see the part that needs to be replaced, it looks like a llittle paddle, sometimes the spline sleeve the part it rides in needs to be replaced also ,but you are going to have to take a look at it first.Do you have the parts book ? If not give us a call we will be glad to help

So I decided to take a picture cause we have heard a picture is worth1000 words and all, The short handle PTo lever Lower right, I can disengage with the engine running but cant engage with engine running it just grinds so the engine has to be stopped to engage, the long handle PTO lever upper left will not disengage and just doesent seem to work at all??

So I wanted to atleast get my story straight in regards to the 2 control levers and whats going on.

The clutch is pushed fully to the floorboard when attempting shifts.

Tommy Do you still think it is the lump shifter?

                    Rod,

That short lower lever is to engage the PTO shaft.

The other lever is not for the PTO.  If you are stuck in the mud, etc and 4WD won't get you out, that lever can be used to engage both rear tires to eliminate slippage.

If it's grinding it's what Carl said, your PTO clutch is out of adjustment, man very confusing,

Rod here is what you said earlier in the post NO GRIND

                          Hello all:

I thought I would just reply to this instead of starting a new one.  My PTO will not engage on my 284.  It grinds while trying to engage it and then nothing.  Is it a clutch problem or something inside the drivetrain and what are my steps to fix it?  Thanks for any info!

Probably a clutch problem.  Sounds like it isn't completely releasing the 2nd stage that controls the PTO.  Could be the shear pin in the linkage, could be mis-adjustment, could be a worn clutch, depending on the number of hours on the tractor, style of driving and whether or not the clutch was properly adjusted when the tractor was first put into service.

With the engine off, pull up on the PTO lever to engage.  Start the engine.  Does the PTO shaft turn now?

sorry for the late response. I just got around to getting a chance to try things.  The PTO engages in the down position.  I have tried starting it engaged and disengaged and nothing works.  when the lever is all the way up in the engaged position and you attempt to engage it by pushing the lever down, it will grind very briefly but thats it.  Not sure where to start with this.

where is the shear pin located.  It has worked fine for years and I believe this fall when I was brush hogging is when it stopped working.  i remember it working fine then suddenly not engaging .  I finally got it to engage again to finish the brush hogging and that was the last time i used the PTO. Now I cant get it to engage at all.

There is a pin where the PTO lever connects to the shaft.  If that pin is ok then you might have a broken what the Chinese call a “shift lump”.  Look in your parts book. I have seen several of them break.  You have to pull the lift box top off to get at it.  But really not too hard to change. Good luck.

Follow the PTO lever to where it connects to the shaft.  Thoroughly clean that area.  Place the PTO lever in the up position.  Using a straight edge and scribe or nail make a mark across both the lever and shaft.  Move the PTO lever to the bottom position.  If that scribed mark looks exactly as it did before, your problem is internal.  If the scribed mark is slightly off, it is probably the pin that connects the lever to the shaft just behind your scribe mark.
