        well I do not know what engine you have but about 2500 is what they are governed to run at max. These engines run well at 1800 to 2000.

          Screw it in until it touches the flywheel and then back it out 3/4 turn and lock it. If you didn't do that I'm surprised you got any reading at all.

          Why did you replace it if the old one was working?

            The old one quit working.  That's the way I put it in ,touched the flywheel then backed it off.

              Are you certain the new unit is the correct type?

              Have you double checked the wiring connections?

                cranked the tractor today tach was working like it was supposed to, reading correctly.  guess it just needed a little break in period
