I purchased an old Brands 3pt backhoe attachment and was concerned because everyone was saying a 3pt won’t hold up. I’ve dug 600′ so far 4 1/2 foot depth to run a water line thru reclaim which is loaded with rock. I hit a buried mine road bed that was bedded with riprap 20′ wide and packed hard as concrete. I also hit 15′ of soil like coleachy and the only way I could get thru it was to turn the bucket teeth straight down and raise full heigth and slam it down to bust it up. The hoe and tractor have held up good. I’ve got 1200′ to go. It’s tough but I’m getting about a 100′ in a 12hr day. The old hoe runs off the tractor hydraulics and is getting the job done.

That’s great progress considering what you’re digging through. I’m not familiar with the term “coleachy” but it sounds like you’re describing caliche (ka-lishe). It’s like grey concrete, but there are a couple of good ways to attack it without destroying your equipment in the process: It works much better if saturated with a 50/50 solution of water and baking soda (you can do that with a tank sprayer). Another thing that makes quick work of caliche is tiger teeth on your bucket. Just set your bucket at a slight angle toward the tractor and with the boom set in float, just drag it back toward you. You’ll be surprised what a difference those teeth make. Here is a pic of mine.

And by the way, I think frame mounts are widely overrated.

            Rob,

You’ve got it right. I know how to say it not sure how to spell it. (caliche) I’ve hit two 15′ sections so far. Thats some hard stuff. The tiger teeth look really mean. I’ve got 1200′ to go. I’ll get there. I’ve never really worked a backhoe or attachment before. I’m starting to get comfortable with it.

This is the four foot deep caliche I’ve been working through lately. I feel your pain.

Just got home, I pulled two back to back double shifts. Wow! Looks like your moving a lot of dirt, of course I noticed you’ve got the equipment to move it. Is the dozer able to cut thru it. I’m heading to the lake property in the morning to start digging again and won’t be back until next wednesday. They’re putting the water meter in friday, of course it’s on the otherside of the road and I had to pay them to bore under the road. It’s suppose to warm up to 70 degrees so I plan on rolling out one of the 900′ rolls of pipe to lay in the sun and straighten out. I can’t remember temps this cold in May.

I’m halfway with pipe layed in a sand bed and filled in other than the two hydrant connections and a y. I hit a bolder yesterday and tried to dig around it so I could remove it. It’s the size of a small car so I had to dig around it, because I don’t have anything to handle that. The hoe is still holding up.

I hate it when those big rocks get in the way. I had an old abandoned cistern get in my way, so I just took it down.
