I drained the hydraulic tank today in search of the metal particles I saw at the exit of the pump.  I found not only metal particles but sand, dirt, rocks, and general crud.  I haven't pulled the suction filter yet but I will later this week.

So I guess my question is: How worried should I be?  There hasn't been any hydraulic issues.  Everything seems to be working fine.  I'm only going down this road because I went to fix a leak and found metal particles when I removed the high-pressure flange at the pump.

Of course I'm going to clean the tank.  Any suggestions on how to do that?  Also, when I remove the suction filter, what should I be concerned about when I put it back? (i.e. torque spec on that big banjo bolt, o-rings, etc)

Cleaning the reservoir will be a lot easier if you completely remove the suction strainer (it's behind the big banjo fitting). A good rinse with kerosene should emulsify any crud in the bottom and flush it right out. Use an Air-Vac if you have compressed air handy.

So the shavings are probably from the manufacturing process. I've seen wierder things on new US made products.
